Invention of Knowledge
This collaboration between Yes vocalist Jon Anderson and Swedish multi-instrumentalist and leader of the Flower Kings Roine Stolt was recorded over the course of two years or so via long-distance collaboration. Stolt assembled a squad of backing musicians and, more importantly, five backup singers (two men, three women); Anderson wrote the lyrics and played some synth and percussion. The ultimate result is a cross between the high prog of ’70s Yes and more modern art-rock; the arrangements are lush and soaring, with synth-orchestral flourishes and sudden surges and climaxes as Anderson’s high, clear voice offers positive-thinking bromides that you don’t have to think about too deeply. Sure, it’s a little goofy, but it’s also transcendent when you’re in the mood for it.
