Egyptian DJ and Producer Abadir sets out each album with a specific intent: where Pause/Stutter/Uh/Repeat explored the intricacies of human voice, and the seminal MUTATE combined Arabic rhythms with global dancefloor ideas for a collection of fierce club bangers, Ison recaptures the memories and feelings of growing up among Cairo’s Coptic community. Hymns, chants, field recordings of church bells and masses are filtered through the haze of memory, with surges of Abadir’s signature rhythm constructions coming through on tracks like “Sacraments” and “The Syriac Club.” Abadir is careful to specify that this isn’t some sort of ethnographic work, but rather it is “purely personal; a fictional sound rooted in the present.”
