A James Brown produced funk album from vocalist Marva Whitney, It’s My Thing is an intense ride, with James Brown’s classic 60s band at full throttle matched by Whitney’s brassy force-of-nature voice. It’s mostly punchy, rollicking late-60s earthy R’n’B/funk, characterised by Brown’s pioneering arrangements where every instrument played a percussive role. The inclusion of a pair of funky instrumentals seems odd, especially seeing as one of them, ‘In The Middle’, was released a few months previously as the B-side to a James Brown Christmas single but overall, It’s My Thing is a decent funk-soul collection.
