After leaving Miles Davis’s band, alto saxophonist Bartz formed his own band, NTU Troop, and in 1973, they recorded this double live LP at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Alongside keyboardist Hubert Eaves, bassist Stafford James, and drummer Howard King, he rips through 11 tunes that blend soul, jazz and funk. King is a jackhammer behind the kit, and Eaves’ electric piano delivers psychedelic post-gospel fervor. Bartz’s saxophone solos and pro-Black lyrics are equally fierce, the latter delivered in an untrained but impassioned voice.
