Proof that two heads really are better than one – idols Ami Onuki and Yumi Yoshimura had difficulty getting their own careers off the ground, so they teamed up and formed Puffy (renamed Puffy AmiYumi in the US to avoid the wrath of Sean Combs). Thanks to help from former Unicorn frontman Tamio Okuda, the duo’s career really took off with their 1998 effort JET CD. Their delectable pop rock ranges from garage jams (“Jet Police” notably quotes The Who) to effervescent 50s girl group bops (“CAKE IS LOVE”) to the unexpected Sabbath sludge of “Little Beauty.” Natural charm shines through each song – no wonder they got their own Saturday morning cartoon a few years later.
