For their relatively short existence, the sprawling French collective Saïan Supa Crew was one of the greatest live spectacles on Earth. Smashing together not just hip hop, but reggae, West African / Parisian zouk, disco, they had the kind of onstage interplay — with members swapping rap lines, beatbox rhythms, dance moves — that at their best made them an explosion of joy. You can see it in many of their videos, and you can hear it throughout their 1999 debut album. A live vocal percussion take on Anita Ward’s “Ring my Bell” is the centrepiece that captures that live energy, but from beginning to end of an hour and a quarter of music, the ebullient joy never ends.
