Glasgow’s Camera Obscura had been operating in the indie pop shadow of Belle And Sebastian for a number of years before their 2006 breakthrough third album. Propelled by the galloping, Spector-ish, Lloyd Cole And The Commotions-referencing sweep of opener “Lloyd, I’m Ready to Be Heartbroken,” Let’s Get Out This Country boasted a deft classicism and musical sophistication far beyond any notion of ‘twee’. Singer Tracyanne Campbell’s tender, rueful songs are given a full widescreen colourisation here with both lyrics and arrangements managing to be both in thrall to their musical touchstones, yet fully able to transcend them.
