Level3

Level3 was Perfume’s global breakthrough. A heavily danceable album packed with stomping beats, squelching and grinding synth melodies, and wave-your-arms choruses, it also featured a surprising amount of English-language lyrics, most notably on the singles “Spring Of Life” and “Spending All My Time.” The latter song was better in its single mix than the album version, but was still a fascinating, mantra-like dose of pop hypnotism. “Clockwork” has an almost Kraftwerk-ish quality (from their Techno Pop era), while “Party Maker” lives up to its title with a skull-crushing Berlin-style techno beat and relentless waves of energy, “Daijyobanai” skips by at blinding speed, with the women’s voices chopped into digital chirps and thick dubstep bass drops interrupting occasionally, and “Point” is set to a skittering drum ’n’ bass beat adorned with…harp?
