Alice Coltrane’s final Impulse! album of the 1970s is one of her strongest, most conceptually unified records. Her trio with bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Ben Riley are joined by 18 string players for three original pieces; a wild, psychedelic version of Stravinsky’s “The Firebird”; and a lush, gorgeous version of the gospel song “Going Home,” on which she plays both harp and Wurlitzer organ.
