In 2019, Earth, Wind & Fire’s lead vocalist quietly released a stunning collection of funk and soul tunes performed with a rub-your-eyes crew of jazz all-stars, from Chick Corea, Kenny Barron and Robert Glasper to Kamasi Washington and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah. The repertoire includes two Curtis Mayfield songs, “Billy Jack” and “We’re a Winner,” Marvin Gaye’s “Just to Keep You Satisfied” and a version of Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime” swathed in eerie dub echo, anchored by booming upright bass and adorned with subtle splashes of guitar and EWF-style horns. Bailey’s falsetto runs remains as thrilling as ever.
