Lovers and Trippers
Lovers And Trippers is generally fuller sounding and warmer than its predecessor, Life’s Rising, which was the first album from Sufi, the project of A.R. Kane’s Rudy Tambala with his sister Maggie. You can hear they’ve settled into their sound here, and while Lovers And Trippers does lack the lightness of touch of Life’s Rising – which was part of what made that album so unique – it’s excellent to hear Rudy and Maggie embracing, more directly, their love of soul and R&B; the contours of these songs are playful and elegant, the grooves smoky and tender. Curious, too, to hear them revisiting an old A.R. Kane song, “Cool As Moons”, which originally appeared on that group’s New Clear Child – it’s lovely to hear Maggie singing this gorgeous song of longing.
