Luck Be a Weirdo Tonight
Maintaining many aspects of dance / electronic / sampling music but eschewing its fascination with looping and repetition, Fila Brazillia instead perfected an aesthetic full of production surprises and musical progression. Take just the first two tracks on Luck Be… : “Lieut. Gingivitis Shit” is five minutes of sparsely arranged, thematic slo-mo lounge-funk that comes with a hint of Blaxploitation soundtrack swagger. It’s followed by “Billy Goat Groupies,” a pastoral funk/jazz jam based around an acoustic guitar riff and a classic-Fila shuffling drum track, the beats no doubt pored over for hours in the studio now given centre stage in the mix, over which they introduce a mournful woodwind ensemble motif — before switching instantly, and somehow smoothly, into a psychedelic guitar wig-out. It’s like an endless repository of musical ideas; another Fila Brazillia album full of audio intrigue and sonic easter eggs.
