Mahoney’s Last Stand (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Released

1972 film Mahoney’s Last Stand (billed as Mahoney’s Last Estate in the US) is so obscure some have speculated that it might have even been made up by The Faces’ ever-mischievous Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane. It wasn’t, but it’s unlikely to match up to the soundtrack the two put together for it. Bringing in an impressive roll call of mates including Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys, Ian Stewart and Pete Townshend, these largely instrumental songs weave together blues, country, rock and roll, folk, bluegrass and gospel with a carefree alchemy that only two pasty faced limeys could pull off. The LP of Mahoney’s Last Stand was released nearly four years after the film’s release and was largely overlooked at the time, but in its mood and rootsy, loose musicianship, it’s up there with both The Faces’ best work and the jewel in the Stones’ 70s crown, Exile On Main Street.
