What a difference a vocalist makes. A Dutch death-doom band, looking to stand out, hired a young singer-songwriter named Anneke van Giersbergen and went from unremarkable to unmistakable. Van Giersbergen’s versatile voice immediately separated them from the sad growling dudes that characterized the genre without even changing the instrumental parts that much. A masterpiece of melancholy.
