Country is the only popular music that gave the violin a central role, with the condition that it not be called a violin. So we have the fiddle, with few practitioners better than Baker. This twenty track collection shows that not everybody in country is sawing the bejesus out of their instrument and making it squeal. Baker has a smooth and delicate tone, and feels occasionally like Scott Joplin (who, yes, played piano, but that’s America).
