Let’s go back to the good old days when indie rock albums leaked all the time (and it seemed to only help grow the audience) and iTunes Free Songs of The Week roamed the earth. Athens, GA’s Deerhunter’s third album Microcastle seemed to many, myself included, to come from nowhere. Its mix of kraut jams and early-Beck-by-way-of-Nico folk excursions was one of those records that came out at the right time to introduce the squares to modern indie. Listening back to it now it still feels weird and refreshingly new — a deceptively stripped back rock album that lies bookended by two psych freak outs and cuts through any foggy production with hooks that still slither and bite. Lounge lizard shoegaze for the dance crowd.
