Robert Hood, one of the founding fathers of Detroit techno, creates a multifaceted masterpiece on this 2020 album. It’s much less oppressive and scary than his 2010 urban-horror concept record Omega; there are tracks (“Fear Not,” “Run Bobby, Run”) that offer some of the exultation of his house music side, which he expresses as Floorplan. There’s also some seriously cold-eyed techno, though, like the punishing “Ignite A War,” and even some surprisingly experimental and gentle material, like “Black Mirror,” which showcases beautiful synth melodies and doesn’t even have a beat for the first half of its nearly six-minute running time.
