In combination with their astonishing swan song Laughing Stock, Talk Talk also released a series of three CD singles with alternate takes and outtakes, which rapidly fell out of print. Missing Pieces appeared a decade later as a handy compilation of this material, adding “Piano,” a lengthy, minimal Mark Hollis piece released on an album by the duo Allinson/Brown in 1998. Two unreleased tracks, “Stump” and “5:09,” are enjoyable instrumental curios, while the most striking alternates include a vivid, edgier “After the Flood” and a slightly looser “New Grass.”
