Morning / Evening
2015’s Morning / Evening is comprised of two twenty-minute tracks and is an ambitious musical trip that references new age, house, ambient and electronica. Morning begins with perhaps the single most orthodox 4/4 drum pattern Four Tet has ever programmed, and heads off, via a continually looping Bollywood vocal sample, into an elegiac uplifting journey, decorated with new age style clear, clean synths and bright synthetic pads. Seven minutes in and what had previously been a pretty slick and optimistic groove mutates into something more ramshackle and tense as he slices and dices drum and synth sounds into new rhythmic shapes, and overlays slightly chaotic sound FX. Evening is beatless, new age-y swirling pads for its first meandering 13 minutes, before a suite of smeared yet precise, hazy yet weighty beats entirely change the mood. Another inventive and expansive Four Tet album.
