The tape manipulation and other sonic trickery which Holger Czukay took from his studies with Karlheinz Stockhausen into his work with Can wasn’t just influential — it also set him in good stead to participate in subsequent musical advancements. Just as Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit adapted effortlessly to electronica in his work with Burnt Friedman, so Czukay not only understood 90s ambient music, but excelled at it. This 1993 album absolutely encapsulates the playful trippiness of the best chillout rooms, using found sound, played instruments and electronic processing to dissolve time, suspend rules and surround the listener in a cocoon of fantastical detail. It’s mind-expanding as anything, but it’s also big, magical fun.
