Need New Body

Around the turn of the millennium there wasn’t really a name or scene for music like this — hence the coinage of “beardo weirdcore” and other affectionately meant but rather more ableist terms for it. But though it’s definitely peculiar, it’s not sui generis — far from it. Its clangs, blurts, one note riffs, free jazz explosions, camp narrations, pop interpolations and unannounced stops and starts place it firmly in an American Prankster tradition that runs from John Cage and Sun Ra through Beefheart and The Fugs through Devo, Residents, Butthole Surfers to Matmos and beyond.
