Years after Caspar Brötzmann’s Massaker had vanished from the earth, the guitarist returned with a new trio. This time, he was backed by bassist Marino Pliakas and drummer Michael Wertmüller, both members of his father Peter’s Full Blast trio. They’re a much more active rhythm section than he’d ever played with before; Wertmüller delivers Rashied Ali-style free rock pulse rhythms as Pliakas thundered up and down his fretless bass’s neck. All that energy drove the leader to ever more ecstatic heights of Stratocaster abuse. For half of this live album, they’re joined by former Einstürzende Neubauten percussionist F.M. Einheit, whose clanging and scraping metal is the perfect complement to the guitarist’s post-Hendrixian weather systems.
