Nostalgic Moments

Released

Don’t let the naff name put you off — Nostalgic Moments, the second album by South African a capella trio The Soil is a sweet pop record in the time-honored township tradition of harmony singing. The three members met in their Soweto secondary school choir back in 2003, and in 2011 shot to fame in South Africa with their self-titled debut that drew comparisons with legends like The Mahotella Queens and Ladysmith Black Mambazo for their warm, radiant vocals. But it was the soul stirring “Unspoken Word” that really caught the attention of the rest of the continent in 2014: Luphindo ‘Master P’ Ngxanga’s gentle, steady beatboxing, Buhlebendalo Mda’s powerful lead vocals, and Ntsika Fana Ngxanga’s restrained harmonies are enough to transmit a ton of emotion without using a single word — the language they’re using on this track is a made up one, in a testament to their emotional resonance. Elsewhere they sing in various South African languages and sometimes in English, but stick to a similar, stripped own formula, except on the haunting “Hamba Uyosebenza,” where they are joined by Ladysmith Black Mambazo in what must be a pretty significant stamp of approval.
