Octava
Released
Described as a “meditative, immersive instrumental group,” Phi-Psonics are an LA-based jazz quartet (bass, keys, woodwinds and drums) and Octava is their second album released on UK jazz trumpeter Matthew Halsall’s extraordinarily reliable Goodwana Records label. The pace here, when there’s any pace at all, is slow and calm, and the mood across the eight tracks is still, inward-looking and introspective, but in no way detached, inaccessible or cold. Instead, Phi-Psonics make highly approachable, contemplative, tranquil, emotional jazz music, full of space and exquisitely unhurried melodic ideas. Octava is forty golden minutes of peaceful, tender and at times undeniably pretty jazz, a beautiful album that can both soothe and cheer.
