Bruce Lamont wields his saxophone like Lemmy used to play his bass: as a weapon, not a tool. He captains this Chicago-based psychedelic post-metal outfit, and on their fifth album all the disparate pieces they previously played with fall into place. Both atmospheric and aggressive, using builds with no payoff in unexpectedly effective ways, the swirling darkness and sax give this a noir feel that other post-metal acts lack. It’s equally engaging with both barnburners (“Thinning the Herd”) and desolate dirges (“Farewell to the Flesh”).
