Pianist and composer Christian Wallumrød is part of a younger generation of Norwegian musicians taking the concept of “chamber jazz” to new heights as well as new depths. Describing his music is difficult, though one can certainly start with “Startic,” the cellular scale of which displays his sense of detail, or “Stille Rock,” wherein pathos reigns supreme. Combinations of trumpet, violin, tenor saxophone, cello, and drums (along with dashes of toy piano, harmonium, and vibraphone) add colorful variation. Percussion, too, plays a vital role in adding leaves to every tree while also appreciating the branches.
