Of artists working in the anything-but-grey area between classical, soundtrack, electronica and so on – think Max Richter, Nils Frahm and co – Roger Goula’s work comes closest to the space voyaging ambient of 90s chillout rooms. The title of his 2016 debut album refers to the sense of awe and personal transformation reported by astronauts on seeing the Earth from space, and the calmly sublime music communicates that just perfectly. It reaches peaks of surging electronic/acoustic sound but some of its most magical moments are focused on the sound of a single violin, double bass or piano tone floating in the void.
