Poppies: Assorted Finery from the First Psychedelic Age

Recorded
1966-1970

To say there are uncounted psych compilations going over the late 60s and early 70s is an understatement, but Poppies deserves some shine. Compiled by Alec Paleo in 2019 from the Concord label’s group holdings, including the back catalogs of Vanguard and Original Sound, Poppies digs up some fascinating obscurities and deep cuts, with Paleo’s liner notes as always being deeply informative. The title comes from the opening song, a Buffy Sainte-Marie number that ranks among her most engaging and mysterious.
