Population II
1970
Hobbit Records
Randy Holden’s debut solo effort in 1970 after his short stint with Blue Cheer became the stuff of star-crossed legend, covering everything from a sponsorship for sixteen amps from the noted Sunn0))) manufacturer to mastering issues, bankruptcy and his departure from music for decades. The music itself, though, is simply legendary in its own right, with woozy, heavy as hell songs performed by Holden and drummer/keyboardist Chris Lockheed. Compositions like “Blue My Mind,” “Keeper Of My Flame” and “Fruit & Iceburgs” all have blasting, birth-of-doom-metal dark energy.
