Quicksand/Cradlesnakes

Califone’s music has always reminded me of putting your head on someone’s stomach and hearing everything going on inside. There’s a lot of rumbling, a lot of gurgling, and that — mixed with what you can hear going on outside in your other ear — creates this symphony of otherworldly delight. Take Quicksand/Cradlesnakes, a sublime addition to the Tim Rutli canon of tortured blues and windy percussion. This is folk music that feels literal; you can hear folks tapping, clapping, wandering around through the songs. Even when seemingly straight (the gorgeous ballad “Horoscopic Amputation Honey” and the Velvets-played-on-a-rubber-band rocker “Your Golden Ass”), it’s music that’s as alive and bendable as the human body.
