Trumpeter/producer/composer Will Miller has a foot in Chicago’s formidable jazz scene, another in indie rock (as a member of Whitney), and a third that straddles the gap between them and modern hip-hop, on call for everyone from A$AP Rocky to SZA. Resavoir is Miller’s hearkening back to the glory days when all genres seemed a tad closer in proximity, when complex horn arrangements could power the pop of Earth Wind and Fire, or even a more recent vintage, say Dilla flipping a prog nugget into a head-nodding beat. As the clouds at dusk cover art suggests, liminality is Miller’s preferred mode: songs alight on R&B before dissolving into ambient, or a Tortoise-esque instrumental slips into AM gold.
