Rise

It’s well known by now that A.R. Kane were the influential group that put the term “dream pop” into the lexicon, but they still seem strangely underrated. The duo’s solo efforts after they parted ways are seldom discussed; neither Alex Ayuli’s multimedia experiments nor Rudy Tambala’s flirtations with Indian mysticism tend to make it into conversations when discussing the band’s legacy. It’s pretty surprising, then, that the most obscure A.R. Kane apocrypha of all would see a reissue 35 years after the fact. Rise is an expanded remaster of Tambala’s collaboration with Alison Shaw of Cranes, originally released as 7” you could only receive by mail order as part of Rough Trade’s Singles Club. The four songs and one alternate mix here are just as dreamy as anything A.R. Kane put to wax, with Shaw’s haunting vocals effortlessly floating between Tambala’s nimble guitar.
