At a 1977 concert curated by electroacoustic pioneer François Bayle and staged at Paris’s Théâtre Récamier, Don Cherry and his band (including Naná Vasconcelos on berimbau and Jenny Clark on bass) collaborated live with G.R.M. composer Jean Schwarz. But the tapes languished in Schwarz’s personal archive for more than 45 years. Stunningly brought to light in 2023, Roundtrip reveals yet another polygonal side of Don Cherry’s muse, his pocket trumpet and donso n’goni gamely tangling with Schwarz’s array of tapes and modular synthesizer squiggles. The live performance moves from hushed solo instrument explorations to jazz group interplay to the outer regions of sound and back.
