With a shadow of The Temptations in its all-hands-on-deck vocals, some wisps of early ‘70s Sly Stoneristic jingle in Greg Kane’s pacy, bouncy choruses, and while wearing suits from the Bryan Ferry school of sophistication, Hue and Cry seem like another silken sophisti-pop bauble. But the Scottish-born brothers Pat and Greg Kane were quoted in Smash Hit magazine as a band trammeled by politics and disgust. Their hit, “Labour of Love,” was, actually, “about the love affair that existed between parts of the British working class and Margaret Thatcher,” they admitted. “We made it sound like a love song so it could get on the radio, but really it’s a hell of a lot more than that.”
