Shock!

1987’s Shock! from twin brother vocalists Taharqa and Tunde Ra Aleem with soul legend Leroy Burgess is at least two things: its combination of tough, electronic beats, synth pads and keys, and soulful harmonies are just a couple of steps away from vocal-house music and it’s like a fascinating musical historical document that charts the connection between mid ‘80s soul and the emerging house music sound. It’s also a great album in its own right, a showcase for the soulful, electro-funk sound that songwriter, vocalist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Burgess pioneered. The synth basses are bright and funky, the electronic snares snap, while the futuristic pads and keys play supporting roles to the wandering melodies, sweet harmonies and Burgess’ instantly recognisable baritone. A prime example of ‘80s electro-funk.
