After a brief stint as the featured vocalist with Martin Swan’s brilliant Mouth Music project, Scottish singer Talitha Mackenzie embarked on a solo career that saw her taking songs from Scottish tradition and performing them in funky, often electronica-tinged arrangements. Solas is a great example of her approach; it finds her focusing especially on music from the puirt à beul tradition, in which a singer puts lyrics to traditional dance tune melodies, and which requires sometimes jaw-dropping vocal dexterity. The program features waulking songs, sea shanties, and a lullaby as well.
