In the mid-1960s, salsa legend Celia Cruz embarked on a solo career not long after she went into exile from her native Cuba. Son Con Guaguancó, the first album she released for Tico Records in the United States, was the next step in her ascent to global superstardom: It’s a remarkable collection of songs that includes “Es La Humanidad,” a plaintive bolero about how the act of forgetting heals wounds, to “Se Me Perdió la Cartera,” an upbeat lament in which Cruz has lost her purse.
