Songs Without Authors Vol. 1

Released

Beginning as a folk-orientated club night set up by Campbell Baum from art rock outfit Sorry, Broadside Hacks soon grew to become a musical collective and a record label. As its title suggests, Songs Without Authors features tracks whose original writers are now unknown, the notion being that the wide circle of musicians featured — including Katy J Pearson, Palma Violets offshoot Gently Tender and Naima Bock from South London post-punk outfit Goat Girl — could take more artistic liberties with the trad. arrangements. It’s a wonderful idea as the largely non-folk musicians all find new slants and spaces to explore, drawing out divergent yet somehow simpatico creations from the musical hand me downs.
