Lush’s second full album found the group, with new bassist Phil King now fully on board following touring for Spooky, still going strong though their overall profile was in a bit of a lull. Blame whatever expectations or assumptions about what bands were supposed to be doing in 1994 in general, one can suppose, because on Split, starting with the building drama of “Light From a Dead Star,” the group’s ear for catchy songs remained intact, as singles like “Desire Lines” and “Hypocrite” readily demonstrated.
