Like many titans of the period during which the classical style gave way to the Romantic, Louis Spohr was a celebrated and prolific composer in his day but was quickly forgotten after his death. On this album, clarinetist Paul Meyer leads the Orchestre de Chamber de Lausanne in brilliant renditions of Spohr’s four concertos for the clarinet, in many ways the perfect instrument both to convey the passing of an era and to express the emotional intensity that would become the hallmark of the Romantic. Meyer’s playing is exquisite, and the music itself is sumptuous.
