Sublime

1996
Limbo Records

The band Sublime today, in some circles, has a brand of trashy Orange County ska dudes. There’s nothing incorrect about that description. It’s accurate, but the present-day connotations distract from the virtuosic musicianship and lyrical profundity that characterize this all too short-lived band. Sublime’s 1996 self-titled album talks about sourcing their own instruments from the 1992 Los Angeles riots, the allure of the rituals of Santeria, and their love-hate relationship with their own dog who stunk up their tour van. This record has “Doin’ Time” for heaven’s sake.
