The polyglot approach of Savina Yannatou has found a suitable home on the polyglot label of ECM. Sumiglia is a prime example of the Greek singer’s extraordinary gifts, which shine all the brighter in the presence of her band, Primavera en Salonico. In their hands, folk songs feel like they were written in the moment. Drawing inspirations from places as close as her homeland (“Evga mana mou”) to others as far as Ukraine (“Ta chervona ta kalinonka”) and Armenia (“Ganchum em yar ari”), she handles every cultural nuance as if it were her own.
