An old schoolmate of Tom “Squarepusher” Jenkinson and the team behind the Spymania label (as well as drummer for Super_Collider‘s live incarnation), Matt Yee-King was very much part of their school of hyper-edits and mischievous humour. But, as befits someone who would go on to become an academic doing a lot of cutting edge work on sonic encoding and AI in music, he took a fiercely rigorous approach to his compositions. Though composed on bare bones equipment (often little more than a Commodore Amiga), these feel hyper-advanced — dissolving Detroit techno, jazz, jungle and more and recasting them as four dimensional geometric structures that are somehow minimalist but dizzyingly complex at the same time.
