Suspended Night
Released
There was always something nocturnal about Tomasz Stanko’s sound, but the Polish trumpeter concretized that association anew on Suspended Night. With his trusted traveling companions (pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and drummer Michal Miskiewicz) in tow, he makes every trip feel like a homecoming. After the introductory “Song for Sarah,” the album’s remainder spreads itself across the 10-part “Suspended Variations,” each of which could be unspun into an album in its own right. Even at its briefest, the quartet treads expansive waters. Such melancholy is hard to come by, especially in melodic form.
