Suspiria [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]

Thom Yorke did a decent job for the 2018 remake of Suspiria, but prog-rock outfit Goblin’s score for Dario Argento’s 1977 original remains a benchmark and one of the greatest horror soundtracks ever composed. Wails, shrieks, growls and all manner of sounds from the netherworld are woven into the nightmarish gallop of music which never once lets up the tension, be it through the howl from Hades of Sighs or the film’s main musical theme – a warped mutation of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells, used to such chilling effect in The Exorcist four years previously. Even without the film to accompany it, it makes for a terrifying listen.
