Recorded in London in 1980, Sweeter Than Honey, Calypso “Mahuno” and High Lifes Celebration is one of several collaborations between Ghanian highlife legends Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas. Composed and arranged by Taylor, with Thomas contributing his smooth, sweet vocals, the record is a unique blend of Ghanaian highlife (especially the the guitars and the vocals that veer between plaintive and joyful) and the bubbling cadences and call-and-response vocals of calypso. A soulful, intensely warm record that makes me want to drop everything and sit under a tree sipping sweet, sticky palm wine.
