For years, pianist Jason Moran and his trio – Tarus Mateen on bass, Nasheet Waits on drums – played the Village Vanguard the week of Thanksgiving. This 2003 live album comes from one such residency. Moran’s fiercely modern approach to the keyboard owes a lot to bluesy, striding forebears like Jaki Byard and Fats Waller, and his compatriots support and surround him with rhythms that clatter like mobile junk sculptures.
