The Girl With a Hole In Her Heart

Released

A Man Called Adam’s lockdown album was released in 2023 and had been recorded the previous year. It’s made up of mostly dance floor-targeted house disco and electronica of various flavours, interspersed with beatless, ambientish, and experimental pieces. It’s a pandemic album that for inspiration turned back to the dance floors that had been out of bounds, and which is full of the shared lockdown experiences of family, loneliness, isolation and of home, which in this case was Teeside in the North East of England which looms large in the album’s lyrics and themes.

AMCA’s USP has always been the ability to come up with fresh takes within the well-established boundaries of house and disco, sidestepping the problems of translating musical ideas that work well in clubs to home listening by a continual wandering sonic inventiveness, and they do it again here. The Girl…’s 4/4 tracks range from cool, efficient, unrelenting and tech-tinged, to chugging, introspective, smokey and deep, celebratory glitter ball disco jams, and hybrid Northern-folk house. A quintessentially English house music lockdown album.
