Pentangle were a five-member British group featuring guitarist/vocalists John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, singer Jacqui McShee, bassist Danny Thompson, and drummer Terry Cox. Though they emerged out of the British folk music scene of the mid ’60s, they were always about much more than just pastoral paeans to harvest time; Thompson and Cox were serious jazz players who could get things swinging hard, and Renbourn and Jansch’s twin lead guitars, though acoustic, had both power and intricacy. Their self-titled debut album included three traditional tunes (“Let No Man Steal Your Thyme,” “Bruton Town” and “Way Behind the Sun”), a version of the Staple Singers’ “Hear My Call,” and several originals. The instrumental “Bells” is one of their most exciting pieces, featuring a guitar line remarkably similar to one heard in Yes’s “Roundabout” five years later.
