David Bowie’s gamble on a concept album, one that came together even as sessions were already recorded, that focused on an image of a rock star messiah rather than a vague philosophical concept or two turned out to be a stroke of self-promotional genius. Thing is, the songs absolutely killed too: the title track, “Lady Stardust,” “Five Years,” “Hang On To Yourself,” “Starman” and the amazing one-two conclusion of “Suffragette City” and “Rock and Roll Suicide” are wired, blasting rock and roll classics from an amazing band.
